In the New York Times article “Nicotine, Harder to Kick than Heroin,” Scientists stated that nicotine is as addictive as heroin, cocaine or amphetamines.

When inhaled, nicotine reaches a person’s brain in seven seconds, twice as fast as intravenous drugs.

Nicotine affects the brain and central nervous system by changing the level of neurotransmitters and chemicals that regulate mood, learning, alertness and ability to concentrate.

A tolerance for nicotine begins to develop with the first dose. Therefore, the level of use must increase to maintain its effects and to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

Studies on CBD for Smoking Cessation

A study published in 2013 looked at whether CBD could reduce cigarette consumption in tobacco users. It was a double-blind pilot study that involved 24 subjects, all of whom smoked at least ten tobacco cigarettes a day.

Half of the group were given an inhaler with CBD, while the other half got an inhaler with a placebo. The treatment lasted for one week.

All subjects recorded their tobacco cravings and anxiety daily. As part of the study, researchers conducted a follow-up interview 21 days later.

After the initial treatment week, the CBD group smoked 40% fewer cigarettes than before and experienced reduced anxiety. In comparison, the placebo group showed no difference.

Under this trial, 30 smokers took 800 mg of CBD after overnight cigarette abstinence. The participants reported that they felt less pleasure from watching other people smoking. In other words, it was easier for the participants to ignore cigarette stimuli.
